maintainer-clean should remove *all* generated files. This includes
**/Makefile.in, configure, doc/*.info, lib/date.c, windows-NT/config.h,
and some other files.

If you have the autotools (autoconf, automake, & m4), bison, makeinfo,
and Perl installed (I _think_ that's the complete list - I checked
HACKING, but apparently we aren't maintaining the complete list
anymore), you should just be able to run `autoreconf -m' after a
maintainer-clean and get everything rebuilt properly, but if you are
missing any tools, you will get stuck.
