Need help w/ --tty mode

I would like to control ddd from my editor, nedit.  I tried to run ddd
in tty mode but
could not get it to work.  This is what I typed.

nedit Main.cc | ddd --tty a.out


Shouldn't ddd now get any commands output to standard out from nedit? 
What I saw was that the
standard out of nedit was going to the xterm that I started everything
from.

How do I send ddd commands from an external program?
