False alarm. My appologies.
After doing a complete OS re-install, starting with a minimal systems
and adding only those components necessary to provide a basic user
envirionment (with KDE on X11) I found that a fresh installation of ddd
(from a FreeBSD ports binary package) appears to be working normally.
