DocBook is an international standard for technical documentation, and runs on
all Unixes I've ever heard of. Some implementations, like Framemaker aren't
free however.

  Nah, I know what he'll say. :-) Info is far from the most widely used
documentation reading tool. I think HTML is the most accessible format.
I just found a texinfo stylesheet for DocBook at:
http://docbook2x.sourceforge.net/. I'll give it a try. I just think that
rather than rewriting the doc, we'd be better off just figuring out how to do
the DocBook to Texinfo conversion in a quality way. A few hours of web
searching will be far easier than the weeks required to do a rewrite.

  And for WYSIWYG editing, AbiWord and OpenOffice both have some DocBook
editing abilities.
