There are extra nodes (called "pure layer nodes") that carry only a single 
layer of material.  I suspect that such nodes exist in those facets.  You 
can select them and change their size.  Note that these nodes are sometimes 
set to be "hard to select" so that they don't interfere with normal 
editing.  To select them, you must use the "special select" button sequence 
(varies with platform).  See the manual for more information.
