[Discuss-gnuradio] digital AM

Below is a message that was posted to an email list for the Yaesu FT-817
radio. It is more software radio related than GNU radio but still
interesting.

=========================

This weekend at the IBC 2002 conferance in Amsterdam, the DRM (Digital Radio
Mondiale) Consortium demonstrates digital AM for the broadcasting bands
below 30 MHz. The quality of the sound is near-like FM and also text and
other data can be broadcasted together with sound programmes. They are
inviting radio amateurs to participitate in tests with a "software radio".
For that you need a PC with a sound card and a software, planned to be
released for radio amateurs in December. The cost for the software will be
60 Euro. You also need to get access to an IF of 12 kHz from your receiver
to be connected to the sound card. The German company SAT-Service Scneider,
www.sat-schneider.de, is selling a very small mixer (39 Euro) that you
connect to your receiver´s 455 kHz IF. I think DRM would be a nice feature
to have with the FT-817. I have listened to DRM transmissions, even with
programmes in stereo(!) on the short wave bands with a modified AOR 7030 by
using the professional software radio program that is now available.

Maybe someone is already planning to modify a FT-817 or maybe there is no
room for a DRM modification in the FT-817?

Info about DRM can be found at www.drm.org
