I find cloning the git repo and using qgit gives a much clearer picture
of how the branches work though.

And I use gitg to the same effect. These tools are very helpful in looking at the changes being made.

However, those show you individual commits, which there are many of, and not everyone wants that kind of detail. I have been keeping a ChangeLog (of sorts) on gnuradio.org under "API and Code Version Changes" (http://gnuradio.org/redmine/projects/gnuradio/wiki/ChangeSets) to provide a summary description of what changes are being made in the new versions.
