There are also far-field RFID systems, such as the EPC Gen2 standard that was intended to replace product barcodes but has found itself in other applications such as toll road tags and DHS-compliant IDs.

One potential problem with trying to detect these systems with GNU Radio is that the tags themselves will operate over a wide frequency range (e.g. the entire 900 MHz ISM band), so the readers will hop around the band for FCC compliance.

The problem is that technically, the energy sent out by an RFID reader
isn't big enough to detect readers from afar; they are near-field
devices, as opposed to the typical far-field antenna based radio
transmitters.
