AFAIK, j is the standard for gnu tar. RH and mandrake used to ship a patched
version of gnu tar that used y, back before bzip2 support was in the official
gnu tar tree. If you use y with a recent version of gnu tar, it'll say "y is
deprecated, next time use j", or words to that effect...
