I remember seeing this problem myself a few montsh ago. 
The strange thing was that the file .GNUstepDefaults looked
ok.   It contained 

{}

or something similar.  
I found it rather difficult to fix.  
You had to make sure that NO GNUstep applications
(Including gdomap + other services) were running 
before deleting the file.  Otherwise I it will
be recreated with the bad content.

Note:  This is from memory and I am not sure
about the details.  But after fixing it I
never had the problems again.
