Thank you S.J.  I can't simply apply this patch as it would require 
libxml 2.6 and AFAIK we need to support at least libxml 2.3 (please 
correct me anyone, if I'm mistaken).  I will look into a conditional 
compilation/configure fix.  But even if I commit it, I'm not sure 
whether Richard will agree with the approach and he may revert it once 
he returns.
