It's a simple format, basically a dir with the .pkg extension that contains the
compressed appdir of the package to be installed inside a directory hierarchy
that reflects the one that will be used when an installation location is
defines during install time and some other files that give info to the
installer.

The Mac OSX package format is based on this one, although with more options.
