  The versions I use :
make 1.10.0
base 1.10.1
gui 0.9.4
back 0.9.4

But I tried at home, on a computer that has the same GNUstep versions, and got good results :

----------------- Linux-x86/GNUstep ---------------
astr size: w=57.000000, h=14.000000
astra H12 size: w=57.000000, h=14.000000
astra H24 size: w=118.000000, h=27.000000

So, could it be that I am missing fonts (on my Linux-ppc setup) or something like that ?

It is better than my Linux-ppc results, but there is something strange in your results too : lines 1 and 2 should display same results because Helvetica 12 points is the default font.

Goodbye,
         Stéphane.
