portaudio is indeed v19 - it's included both in SuSE 9.1 and in 9.3
(and presumably in 9.2 as well) - so maybe I won't be the last
person to hit this problem!

--disable-gsnd works fine and I'm now taking a look at portaudio 18.1.

I've now built portaudio v18.1 and successfully built gnustep-gui
against it.

I've modified gsnd to use portaudio v19. It seems to work very well. Can you test it, please?

Thanks, Enrico. I'm willing - where and how do I get it and what do I
do with it? As a non-programmer, I need step-by-step instructions!

In my last mail I've forgotten to say you where you can get portaudio v19. It
is at:

http://www.portaudio.com/archives/pa_snapshot_v19.tar.gz

to build it:

./configure
make
make install
ldconfig
