Any comments about the relationship among WO451, GNUStepWeb and SOPE?

Well, SOPE was developed at MDlink since about 1996. It evolved from the WebObjects compatible library libNGObjWeb to the rather large set of frameworks it is today (it also includes stuff like IMAP4 protocol support, iCalendar/vCard parsing, XML processing, LDAP clients, etc etc). The initial motivation was that we needed an application server for our groupware software, that we loved WO (2.0? at the time) but that it was impossible to use WO for the application due to its price (~ $50.000 at the time). So we had to write an own one ...

SOPE was proprietary software until mid-2003. It got released as LGPL when the OpenGroupware.org project was formed.

I think Manuel started to work on gnustep-web ~2000 when SOPE was still closed source, so there was no other (ObjC) web framework. In fact he included a few things I could make free software at the time.

Well, and WebObjects ;-) I think gnustep-web still targets being a 1:1 WO 4.5 clone, but they can probably tell you more exactly. SOPE doesn't, we don't aim for full WO compatibility anymore but rather enhanced WO concepts in significant ways. Eg we introduced a lot of concepts from Zope. Of course it still almost completely WO API compatible.
