GNUstep apps no longer start

Hi all,

my GNUstep apps stopped working. When I try to start any app I get 

2016-09-22 12:55:45.628 Terminal[10492] File NSUserDefaults.m: 616. In [NSUserDefaults +standardUserDefaults] Improper installation: No language locale found

/opt/GNUstep/Local/Applications/Terminal.app/Terminal: Uncaught exception NSInternalInconsistencyException, reason: NSApplication.m:284  Assertion failed in initialize_gnustep_backend.  Unable to find backend back

Abort (core dumped)

Any idea what that might be caused by? I haven't used GUI apps on this machine for a while (used to work). I installed some csw packages in the meanwhile and I rebuilt base after adding a method to NSThread.m for test purposes.

I have already rebuilt base, gui, back and Terminal. But still no avail!? :-(

What else can I check/do to get this fixed? I am out of clues right now! :-(
