This is being sent to Guild activists.

On Wednesday, the House Appropriations Committee, in a bipartisan vote,
adopted a measure to block the recent Federal Communications Commission's
relaxation of the rule limiting the number of TV stations a single network
can own.

The day before, Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) introducted a measure in the
Senate that would stay implementation of all the media ownership rules
recently adopted by a split FCC. Dorgan's action also included broad,
bipartisan support, some of the strongest of which came from former Senate
Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.) (For CWA reaction, go to
http://www.cwa-union.org/news/PressReleaseDisplay.asp?ID=354.)

This after a bill was passed by the Senate Commerce Committee earlier this
month that both restored the lower limit on network station ownership and
the newspaper-broadcast crossownership ban. Two additional measures,
meanwhile, have been introduced in the House.

It appears that support for limits on media ownership is growing on Capitol
Hill.

In today's NY Times, conservative columnist William Safire warns, "This
growing grass-roots grumbling against giantism is getting through to
legislators ordinarily cowed by network-owned station managers or wowed by
big-media campaign contributions." (Go to

column. Be advised you may have to register to enter NY Times site.)
