In bringing the world wide web to the whole wide world,
Geekcorps  http://www.geekcorps.org the ICT division of IESC, a
volunteer-based  501(c)(3) nonprofit  development organization,
is looking for a few volunteers to travel  to  Africa for four
challenging IT projects that are changing the role  of 
information and communication technologies in the developing
world: 

-- Projects

- Mali Connectivity Project

WiFi & Linux Professionals - http://mali.geekcorps.org Geekcorps
is helping teach Malian radio stations and community  centers
how  to work with Linux-based systems, connect the systems by
WiFi over  several  kilometers, and maintain both the systems and
connections with  great  ingenuity and minimal expense. 

Requirements: Fluent French and at least 3-5 years of
professional  experience with advanced Linux is a must. Radio
broadcasting and/or  WiFi  experience preferred. 

- Ghana Marketplace Portal Project 

VSAT/Communications Professionals -
http://www.mistowa.org/dev/index.htm (work in progress)
Geekcorps is teaming up with other organizations to connect
existing  and  new market information system databases into an
open-source database  via  V-SAT, satellite radio, and wireless
internet connection technology.

Requirements: Basic French and at least 3-5 years of
professional  experience in VSAT and satellite communication
installation,  management,  and integration is a must.  Knowledge
of GSM/WAP and web database  integration preferred.

- Senegal Small Business Development Project 

Various Business Professionals - http://www.dfi.org
Geekcorps is paring with local business to teach them how to 
effectively  use multiple IT disciplines to improve their
internal processes,  external  communications, and access to
financing and credit, building  replicatable  workshops to expand
the impact nationwide. 

Requirements: Fluent French and at least 3-5 years of
professional  experience in one of the following: distance
learning, e-Finance,  e-commerce, Open Source Software. Small
business experience  preferred. 

- Kenya One Stop Border Crossing Project

Systems Integration Professionals
Geekcorps is designing an integration system that will link the 
immigration, police, customs and cargo tracking systems of Kenya 
and  Uganda at the Malaba border crossing to speed up the
efficient  transport  of people and cargo through the checkpoint.

Requirements:  At least 3-5 years of professional experience in 
systems  integration including EDI and XML is a must.  Knowledge
of ASYCUDA,  and  GAINDE, and database design including MySQL
preferred.

-- Timing

Volunteers willing to work with people and innovate with minimal 
technical  equipment in a developing country are needed
immediately  (February-March  2005) and would stay in Africa
about four months, teaching small  groups in  a hands-on setting
as they work on their projects. More volunteers  will be  needed
starting in April or May to continue the experience.
