Some of us have always been using the Matsushita-based drives aka the "DVD-RAM"
drives.
Once the 4th gens came out with DVD-R/RW/+R/+RW capability, it was the best
option.
And because of the popularity and open licensing of Matshushita, the cheapest.
I don't deny Pioneer hasn't been the most "helpful" or "reliable."
But Sony/Philips have really screwed over their customers time and time again.
Matsushita implementations have "just worked" because they were solving real
problems from day 1.
Whether it was reliability with PD-CD and, then, DVD-RAM, or adding a low-cost
DVD-R option
in the 3rd gen, since support for all 5 formats since 2003 once the DVD+R
"standard" was actually
reproducable and compatible.
