Please, find attached a simple test file including
all possible forms (old/new, line/display) of equations.
Probably only the "$...$" and "\(...\)" forms should appear in
.bib files, but it is possible that the display mode equations
could appear, so they are also included (both forms) in the
example for completeness. Beware of the old double dollar display
mode form being misinterpreted as two empty single dollar
bounded inline equations.
Also an example with "\url{}" is included in the test file.

P.S.: Maybe the follow up details or development of wish list
items could be tracked as tickers in the bug tracker
(with "item group" or "severity" set to "wishlist"), in order
to generate less noise in this list...
