I am currently with the default monaco.   

Plain text   uses
-apple-monaco-medium-r-normal--9-90-72-72-m-90-iso10646-1 
while italic is 
-apple-monaco-medium-i-normal--9-90-72-72-m-90-iso10646-1

I  have attached  a screenshot  where you  can see  the cursor  over the
italic 'Z'. 

(Actually,  I   noticed  that  italics   are  narrower  on   this  fresh
non-customized installation. I wonder if  it was not previously the case
with my previous non-atsui 10.3.9 powerpc configuration and I could have
customized faces  (and not  remember it) not  to use italics  because it
breaks e.g. gnus layouts. I'll check that tomorrow)...
