Yes, it does, but so what?

    Why? it didn't hurt anything (modulo my stupid taking out the TABs in
    the Node line, which is now fixed).

Because it might hurt something, and there is no reason for it.

    Spurious diffs when comparing to DIR created/rearranged by
    install-info.

I don't follow.  Would you please be less terse?

It seems to me that there will always be variations in the results
obtained by running install-info, because the order of installing
various manuals will vary.
