This is tangential to the discussion, but:

  visible-bell is a variable defined in `C source code'.
  Its value is nil

  Documentation:
  *Non-nil means try to flash the frame to represent a bell.

Unless, of course, you sit outside without a *monitor* either.  Which
would be a bit like blind chess, I guess.
