Looks like this is, as you said, a generic problem with CVS Emacs. 
I found some information about it here:
http://www.mozart-oz.org/pipermail/mozart-hackers/2005/002219.html
which says that: "It seems that compile-mode now enforces read-only."

I applied the suggested workaround (plus some other clean-up code) to
jde-jalopy.

Hi,

when I try to use in jde-jalopy.el (cvs emacs) the function
jde-jalopy-buffer I get the following error:

apply: Buffer is read-only: #<buffer *jalopy-compilation*>

There were probably similar errors in other packages.

How can it be fixed?
