My guess is that users who didn't change the default ended up moving to some
other editor, while those who did stick with Emacs ended up turning on
font-lock. But it doesn't matter. All that matters is that there is a lot
of experience with font-lock, so it's clear that it wasn't/isn't terribly
badly behaved on average.
