What about also replacing the binding of `M-:' so that it invokes `pp-eval-expression'? I don't know if this is safe. There may be Lisp objects for which print works and pretty-print fails. And others have pointed out other problems (though we could avoid them by making a new command which is just like eval-expression except that it pretty-prints).
