I've checked this into a new branch of ERC called "erc-status" (at
http://git.sv.gnu.org/gitweb/?p=erc.git) and have done a bit of extra
hacking on it.

I'm using Ubuntu hardy (the experimental not-yet-released version of
Ubuntu).
