Compatibility with other apps is a valid argument, just not an absolute
rule.

What we could do, though, is to put non-toolkit scrollbars on the left
and toolkit scrollbars on the right.  If that's an acceptable
compromise, I'll implement it.

(The key word is "modern"; and personally, I use xterm with the
scrollbar disabled.)
