I tested it, and did some doc grepping.  It is indeed merely a coincidence.

And even appears to be the default width for Xaw3d.

But I suspect that default was chosen to blend in well with default
fonts in the 14 to 16 px range.  So although it isn't automated, it
probably is, none-the-less, by design.

As you can probably guess, I agree that sizing the bars based on some
one-to-one and onto function of the text font's size would be a good
idea.  I'm thinking the width should scale along the lines of, perhaps,
the square root of the primary font's height?
