I use delete-selection mode, but mainly for one reason: I want DEL to
delete the region when it's active.

This argument

sounds reasonable, since it's not a priori obvious (apart from the
behavior of other applications) that self-inserting characters should
"operate on the region".  That's why I am not sure about making
delete-selection-mode the default.

However, I do feel that the "DEL acts on the region" part of
delete-selection-mode is strongly intuitive.
