I don't care about the difference nearly as much as I care about the
elimination of one space, which makes it display better in an
80-column window. I also personally prefer "(foo)." over "(foo.)" since
the latter counts an improperly nested in my book, but I understand that
this improper nesting is supposedly standard typography, so I'm not
going to oppose it (as long as people don't oppose my use).
