Which is a EBADF from this, apparently:

          nfds = select
#endif
            (max (max_process_desc, max_input_desc) + 1,
             &Available,
             (check_write ? &Writeok : (SELECT_TYPE *)0),
             (SELECT_TYPE *)0, &timeout);
        }

I'm guessing some of the file descriptors in &Writeok (or &Available)
aren't valid.
