I did this:
LC_ALL=C ./autogen.sh
LC_ALL=C ./configure CFLAGS="-O0 -ggdb -g3"
LC_ALL=C make bootstrap
and it succeeds...

On my openSuSE box, gcc identies itself with
gcc (SUSE Linux) 4.5.1 20101208 [gcc-4_5-branch revision 167585]
Perhaps this compiler version is buggy?
