Thanks Andreas!
I did not have any .Xresources in my home
Nor could find any non-empty site-start.el files
I find many files in site-lisp (I can see at least 3 of these directories)
However when I removed .Xdefaults the problem went away.
The offending line being:
emacs*font: -adobe-courier-medium-r-normal--12-120-75-75-m-70-iso8859-1
