Overall this sounds like a nice cleanup.
One relatively-minor comment about those forms.
I take it that the (signal ...) pattern is when
waitpid reports WIFSIGNALED and the (exit ...)
pattern for WIFEXITED. But what happens for
WIFSTOPPED and WIFCONTINUED?
