First, such preferences should be per face, not global, for the
reasons already explained in this thread.

And second, this is not necessarily a user-level issue.  It could be a
requirement that text in a certain face be legible, come what may.  In
that case, we would like to give the Lisp programmer a way to put this
requirement into the face definition.
