You're talking about the marking pass here, right?

in mark_object ():

    case Lisp_Vectorlike:
        register struct Lisp_Vector *ptr = XVECTOR (obj);
        register ptrdiff_t pvectype;

        if (VECTOR_MARKED_P (ptr))

If it's already marked, then the doc field is already marked too so
breaking here is correct.
