Hmmm... how to reproduce that here?  Basically, you are the first person
on this list I would ask for a fix if I ever ran into such a problem.

Well, I did so now for the first time.  What does 'make check' do in
principle?  That is, what kind of build does it use?

These values are perfectly legitimate.  Can this be related to the
without-x issue?
