As an example use-case, I have links in ~/bin for emacs like
emacs-22 -> /usr/bin/emacs
emacs-26-mac -> /Applications/MacPorts/EmacsMac.app/Contents/MacOS/bin/emacs
emacs-27 -> /opt/local/bin/emacs-27.0.50
and, there's
/opt/local/bin/emacs -> /opt/local/bin/emacs-27.0.50
if that will be the cause of trouble ahead.
