I started to implement rounded corners for tabs by adding a new :style to :box face attribute with drawings implemented like in x_draw_relief_rect but had no time to finish before the emacs-27 pretest. But it looks like a wrong approach anyway. But when someone will properly implement rounded corners for buttons they could be used for tabs as well.
