Whether this 'default' one is the original default face or a new 'default' face created by face remapping should not matter in this case.Well, it does. because face-remapping creates a new face.
And? I really don't get it. There are two cases: With an omitted face in a fringe display element, either:(1) "Emacs merges the 'fringe' and the 'default' faces, starting from 'default' (so any color specified by 'fringe' overrides the corresponding color of 'default')."
or:(2) When the 'default' face is remapped, Emacs completely ignores the 'fringe' face, and uses the remapped 'default' face instead.
