I agree. That is why I don't know what formula to propose for
inverting a color. But we can find that out a reasonable one.

To recommend or specify a set of color values
is to presume that it is possible to get useful results
without worrying about those sources of variation.
(And personal taste, too.)
Emacs does specify a default set of color values, and it must do so.
Thus, Emacs must make that presumption. So it is ok to try
another solution which also depends on that presumption.
