Well, if the line begins with a space such as:

 *bold*
^
the word 'bold' is bold and it is no longer a headline....
at least here:
 WinXP
 GNU Emacs 22.0.95.1 (i386-mingw-nt5.1.2600) of 2007-03-08 on
    LENNART-69DE564 (patched)
 Org-mode version 4.67c
