Interesting. I compared the output of C-u C-x =, they are the same
except one line:

Broken:
xft:-unknown-LMRoman12-normal-normal-normal-*-*-*-*-*-*-0-iso10646-1 (#x14)

Working:
xft:-unknown-DejaVu Sans Mono-normal-normal-normal-*-13-*-*-*-m-0-iso10646-1 
(#x0D)

I don't know if this is to be expected...
