OK - I deleted lisp/org-element.el - don't remember why. I did, as suggested by
git status

git checkout lisp/org-element.el

and this cleaned my org:

Successfully reloaded Org
Org-mode version 7.9.2 (release_7.9.2-432-g545166 @ 
/home/rkrug/.emacs.d/org-mode/lisp/)
