And the OP's use of prettify-symbols-mode brings a number of
possibilities to mind!  Can anybody suggest some pretty unicode symbols
suitable for SCHEDULED and DEADLINE?  :-)

Oh, and I'm with you on being clear about the distinction between
parsing and displaying.  Very different use cases and hence different
requirements.
