Prof. Kitchin himself provided a summary on why he decided to give up on
using org-cite. See https://github.com/jkitchin/org-ref/issues/892

I personally used org-ref for a long time simply because no
alternatives. I dislike org-ref because Prof. Kitchin prefers to do
things in very specific way and it is not always possible to customise
them. It is hard to use only a part of org-ref without using everything
and getting surprising behaviour.

Now, I am trying to switch to org-cite + .org files as bibliography. But
the whole thing is an ad-hoc mess.

For citar, why not simply using ivy-bibtex? It supports org-cite, AFAIK.

Best,
Ihor
