Dear colleagues,

You are cordially invited to the CECAM Flagship School "Simulating energy materials with ESPResSo and waLBerla", taking place in Stuttgart, Germany, from October 9-13, 2023.

In this school, students learn to conduct simulations in the fields of statistical physics and charged soft matter using the software ESPResSo. After an introduction to particle-based and lattice-based simulations, we will focus on the electrostatics of ionic liquids in confined geometries, the acid-base titration of polyelectrolytes using Monte Carlo reaction methods, the lattice-Boltzmann method for hydrodynamic interactions, and diffusion-advection-reaction solvers for electrokinetics and catalysis. Lectures will provide an introduction to the physics and simulation model building as well as an overview of the necessary simulation algorithms. During the afternoon, students will practice running their own simulations in hands-on sessions using ESPResSo.

Many of the lectures and hands-on sessions will be taught by developers of the software. Hence, the school will also provide a platform for discussion between developers and users about the future of the software. Moreover, users can get advice on their specific simulation projects. Time will also be dedicated to research talks, which illustrate how the simulation software is applied, and which provide further background in the field of energy materials. All on-site participants are invited to bring a poster and present it during the lightning talks.

Invited speakers:
* Stephan Gekle, Universität Bayreuth (Germany)
* Timo Jacob, Ulm University (Germany)
* Laura Scalfi, Freie Universität Berlin (Germany)
* Peter Košovan, Charles University, Prague (Czech Republic)
* Céline Merlet, Toulouse III - Paul Sabatier University (France)
* Mathieu Salanne, Sorbonne University, Paris (France)
* Svyatoslav Kondrat, Institute of Physical Chemistry, Warsaw (Poland)

Attendance to the summer school is free of charge. To register, go to https://www.cecam.org/workshop-details/1229 and write a short motivation and CV. This school is primarily planned as an on-site event, with lectures and talks streamed live on Zoom for participants who cannot be physically present. If you select online attendance, please mention in your application whether you are interested in participating to the online hands-on sessions.
