What about if you just launch fluidsynth like this:
fludisynth -a file <soundfont> <midifile>
This will render the midifile into raw audio file "fluidsynth.raw" (IIRC
you can change the name of the file with this command line option:
-o audio.file.name=<filename.raw>
It just works here with fluidsynth 1.0.5.
