Sure, nothing there is magic. But I am not sure if you want to implement and maintain it own your own. Looks like supported systems in 1.0.9 were: Win32, OS/2, Mac OS 9, and POSIX style systems. On top of that you have to support the CPU architectures, i.e. probably at least x86, ARM, and PowerPC. Then again, compiler extensions for atomic variable accesses might be usable and help a lot. And of course you can just use glib's implementation for the time being.
